Competing in the Classics

“Studying the Classics has been so integral to my education, my happiness, and my development as a person over the last six years." - Issy A. 20

Competing in the Classics

Last Saturday, Issy A. ’20 represented Marlborough at Crossroads Certamen Cup, an invitational Classics-bowl tournament hosted on the Crossroads campus. As a team of one, she qualified for finals, and then placed first overall in the Advanced division, outscoring multi-person teams from Harvard-Westlake, University High School, Woodbridge High School, and Crossroads School.

This is not the first Classics-related victory for Marlborough this year. Last November, Issy and fellow Classics Club member Isabelle F. ’25 attended the Southern California regional convention of the Junior Classical League. Isabelle took home 3rd place overall in her level of Mythology testing, while Issy captained a mixed-school team to 1st place in the Advanced division of the convention’s Open Certamen competition. Weeks before that, in October, Issy captained a three-person mixed-school Advanced team to 1st place at Stanford University’s Invitational Certamen, and was individually recognized as Tournament MVP based on her performance.

In the coming months, Marlborough Classics Club members hope to continue distinguishing themselves and their school at Junior Classical League events. Individual members are encouraged to participate in National JCL contests, and in April, a delegation will attend the California JCL State Convention at University High School.
