Varsity Tennis Wins CIF Southern Section Division 1 Championship

Congratulations to the Marlborough Varsity Tennis Team!

After going undefeated in Mission League play, the Marlborough Varsity Tennis Team won the CIF Southern Section Division 1 Championship on May 21st, 2021.

The team started the series with a bye in the first round and then beat Yorba Linda High School (10 - 8) in the second.

The quarterfinals were nail-biting, with Marlborough and Martin Luther King High School ending in a tie (9 - 9). After a final count of games, the win went to Marlborough at 70 games, having just narrowly bested Martin Luther King High Schools’ 68.

“This match was one of my favorite moments of the season,” remembers team co-captain Chloe H. ‘21. “We all ran onto the court after we won, and everyone was giving off the most amazing energy. It was one of the many moments that brought our team closer together.”

In the semi-finals, Marlborough beat Woodbridge High School (12 - 6), advancing the team to the final round against Beckman High School.

“We were all really excited and motivated, especially because we remember the disappointment of losing in the Division 1 final last year,” shares team co-captain Arianna S. ‘21. “We were tied 3-3 overall after the first round of matches, but we were all playing confidently, which allowed us to win 5 out of 6 of our second round matches to really pull ahead in the overall score. We were all cheering for each other and happy to just be there playing.”

Marlborough beat Beckman High School (12 - 6), becoming the CIF Southern Section Division 1 champs.

“Winning CIF and rushing to celebrate with my teammates was definitely one of my favorite parts of the season, but I really enjoyed the entire season because we weren't even sure we were going to have one,” says Arianna.

“We get along really, really well and we all care about each others’ and the team's success. Since we know each other well, we can be honest with each other and we know how to help each other if we get negative or are having an off-day. Our matches at the beginning of our playoff run came down to only a few points, and our constant enthusiasm and positive energy for our teammates were probably the main reasons we got through those tough matches.”

We’ll be cheering on Arianna at the Seal Beach Tennis Center on June 9th when she competes in the CIF Southern Section Individual Championships for the fourth year in a row!
