Spring Season Athletics Wrap-Up

Lacrosse. Equestrian. Golf. Track and Field. Swim Team. Softball.

This year we kicked our 7/8 program up a notch by participating in the Junior High Delphic League. Marlborough was one of five teams to start the first ever 7/8 league for the JHDL along with Culver City, Paul Revere, Oaks Christian, Chaminade. The team was led by Coach Jamie Wand and Coach Tiffany Wong. The team practiced 3 times a week and always brought joyful energy and an eagerness to learn the game of lacrosse. As a spectator at their games, you would immediately notice the intensity of the team and their willingness to give 100% of their effort. The team had its first program win vs Paul Revere which they won in an overtime match! Every player was not only taught the basic of lacrosse but also learned how fun it is to be part of a large team and accomplish tasks together!
In Coach Taylor's 2nd season of coaching with Marlborough's JV team, the group continues to gain more and more success. The team ended their season with a winning record while having a maximum of 2 subs per game, meaning a majority of the players were playing the full 40 minutes! We are so proud of the girls for pushing themselves to be the best they can be and look forward to watching these girls develop in their game. Thanks to Coach Taylor for being one of the most patient, motivating, and knowledgeable coaches in the game.
Every year Marlborough Varsity lacrosse looks to raise the bar. This year the Varsity team made it into Division 1 playoffs for the first time in school history, ending the season with an 11-7 record. The team seeded 12th in CIF and 2nd in the league. Our team defense only let in an average of 6 goals a game, leading the LA/OC region as a top 3 defense. The team has graduated 9 seniors who will be very tough to replace and we will miss them dearly. The truly left their mark on Marlborough lacrosse and were a big part in the driving force of the success of the program. We are looking forward to many new faces on Varsity next year and are eager to see who will step up to the plate!

Track and Field

While being a very young team composed of two juniors and several underclassmen, Marlborough was still able to compete well in the very strong Sunshine League. The 7/8 Mustang track and field team worked hard every week, and their effort paid off. The results were seen at every track meet, especially at the Delphic League Final. Despite having a smaller team than other schools, we were proud to send 12 athletes to compete in finals and finished 6th place out 12 schools. All students improved throughout the season and the coaching staff is very proud of each and every one. The athletes learned a lot and they were willing to work even harder toward the end.
Kiera L. ‘23 had one of the best performances at the Delphic final meet. She ran 6 seconds faster than her previous best time. She ran all the way to the end, leaving everything on the track. At the final, Josephine W. ‘22 added a bronze medal in 200m to her gold medal in long and she was part of the 4x100 that came in 5th. tElla P. ‘22 ran her personal best in the 200m prelims, and in the final she finished in 5th place. She also won a bronze medal in the 100m.

Swim Team

After a rocky start, our Marlborough swim team pulled a magical season together, ending in a perfect season as Sunshine League Champs and CIF-SS Div 3  champions.  With 6 swimmers/divers (Grace T. '20, Isabelle S. '21, Timea B. '18, Lindsay P. '19, Maggie M. '18, Jordan P. '18) earning points at CIF-SS Div 3 Championship, the Mustangs won by a margin of 7 points.  The season also led to 4 new school records. Our freshman swimmer Isabelle S. ‘21 set school records in the 500 free and 100 backstroke, finishing 9th at the CIF State Championships. Lindsay P. ‘19 set a new school and league record in the 200 free. The team also set a new school record in the 200 medley relay as well as a new league record.

Seeing the girls come together as a team, continuing to build friendships, and improving their skills every single day has been so much fun to watch. These girls worked extremely hard all season and it I think it definitely showed. The Marlborough Softball Team finished the 2018 season 14-6 overall and placed first in league (tie) after going 7-1 in their Sunshine League appearance. The Mustangs had 20 Varsity lettermen this season with 12 players receiving All-League recognition. We had great leadership from our seniors and have so much talent returning again next year- it is an exciting time to be a Mustang!"
