2018 Alumnae Day

Violets from class years ending in 3s and 8s came together to celebrate Woman of the Year Suzanne Goin ‘84 and the retirement of Julie McCarthy Napoleon.

The Marlborough campus was buzzing with energy last Saturday when nearly 300 Violets returned to catch up with their classmates from class years ending in 3s and 8s going back 75 years! Alumnae also celebrated two Marlborough legends, 2018 Woman of the Year Suzanne Goin ‘84 and retiring teacher and coach Julie McCarthy Napoleon.

In addition to opening seven successful restaurants, Suzanne Goin ‘84 has written two cookbooks, won numerous awards and makes time to contribute her talents to meaningful organizations, including L.A. Loves Alex’s Lemonade and Lunch Matters. Suzanne is also an active alumna, participating in the alumnae mentoring program and is a member of both the Violet Chain and 1889 Society. Because of this, Marlborough is proud to honor Suzanne as the 2018 Woman of the Year. During the Alumnae Association Meeting Suzanne was introduced by fellow alumnae Camilla Belle ‘05, who spoke fondly of their friendship and Suzanne’s commitment to the community.

We also celebrated the 38 years of service by Julie McCarthy Napoleon. Fellow Marlborough educator Tinka Brown and former students Ashley Lyles’ 09, Elina Hubbell Eriksen ‘86, and Lauren Fritzinger ‘87 all spoke of Julie’s dedication and vision. While at Marlborough Julie has expanded the P.E. curriculum to include yoga, self-defense, and athletic conditioning, and guided the gymnastics team to 10 League Championships, a CIF-SS Championship and a Southern California Gymnastics Championship. Julie served as Athletic Director from 1983 to 2000 and later assumed the role of Director of Summer School from 1999 to 2017. Upon retirement, Julie plans to spend more time with her family, volunteer as a foster parent, and continue her work with juveniles in the probation system.
